The principle and troubleshooting of check valves
A check valve, also known as a non-return valve, is often used in parallel with an electronic expansion valve (or capillary tube) in air conditioning systems to control the forward and reverse flow of refrigerant, allowing refrigerant to flow only in a specified direction.
A check valve consists of a nylon valve needle, valve seat, stop ring, and housing. The direction of refrigerant flow is usually indicated by an arrow on the outer surface of the check valve.
As shown in the figure below, the check valve allows refrigerant to flow in only one direction. If the refrigerant flows in the opposite direction of the arrow, the valve body and valve seat will contact, closing the circuit and stopping the refrigerant flow.
Check valves are generally installed vertically with a bottom inlet and top outlet. They are mostly used in heat pump air conditioners, in parallel with an electronic expansion valve or capillary tube.
